LONDON (Reuters) – Uber (NYSE:) will open up its platform to London’s black cabs early subsequent 12 months, the ride-hailing agency stated on Wednesday, signalling a dramatic turnaround in its relationship with drivers of the British capital’s iconic taxis.
In recent times, London’s black cab drivers – who need to move a check known as “The Data” requiring them to memorise 1000’s of routes inside the metropolis – blocked the streets in protests towards the ride-hailing service.
On the time, they argued Uber’s app-based ordering and demand-sensitive pricing threatened their livelihoods.
Black cabs are the one London autos which may choose up passengers from the road or taxi ranks inside the metropolis, and may also be booked by different apps.
The brand new service, which can be rolled out in early 2024, follows almost a decade of tensions between the 2 events, together with an unsuccessful authorized problem by black cab drivers towards Uber’s London working licence in 2019.
“Black Cabs are an iconic a part of the capital, liked by Londoners and guests alike, and we’re proud to work aspect by aspect,” Common Supervisor of Uber UK Andrew Brem stated in a press release.
